Taekwondo Swinton
Swinton Taekwondo (M27): A Korean martial art that was formulated in the nineteen forties, Taekwondo has continued to grow in popularity since then. If you would like to strengthen your mind and body, learn some self-defence techniques, enhance your self-esteem and build your confidence, Taekwondo might be precisely the pastime for you.
As Taekwondo has fairly high physical demands, it is possibly more suited to the younger people of Swinton. That isn't to say that the older generation can't be involved in this popular activity, but merely that there might be other martial arts which are more suited to the less nimble among us. Tai Chi is a perfect example.
Based mainly around kicking moves and manoeuvres like head kicks, fast kicking methods and jumping/turning kicks, Taekwondo was formulated from the practices of various martial arts, by a number of Seoul martial arts specialists in new schools called "Kwans" during the 1940's and 1950's. These "Kwans" were given the names Chungdo Kwan, Changmu Kwan, Songmu Kwan, Jido Kwan and Mooduk Kwan.
Since the Sydney Olympic Games in the year 2000, Taekwondo has been a competitive Olympic sport. This has made it even more popular all over the world with some 60 million people or more actively participating in classes. And it is by joining a Taekwondo class or club that you can commence your adventure of mastering this unique martial art.
A key aspect of Taekwondo is self-defence, and not surprisingly this is one of the primary reasons that individuals in Swinton get involved in classes and engage with the sport. There has been a worrying escalation of violent conduct in recent years and this is particularly widespread in city and town centres throughout Greater Manchester and the British Isles in general. The good thing about Taekwondo though, is that it also encourages self-discipline and a deep respect for others, not such common attributes in Swinton nowadays.
These self-defence techniques may at some time prove to be useful in the outside world, though it is far more likely that you'll only be using them within a supervised class environment. Yet it is a wonderful feeling knowing the fact that you'll always be in a position to defend yourself when you need to.
What to Expect From Your First Class
If Taekwondo isn't a sport that you've ever had a go at before, you will doubtless be curious about what you should expect from your initial lesson if you decide to sign up. Different Taekwondo schools in the Swinton area have varying thoughts on this but in brief; you'll take part in a fifteen to twenty minute warm-up, you'll do a certain amount of technical training, you'll learn some patterns (forms), you'll practice sparring tactics and finally you'll do a warm-down to get your body back into a relaxed state again.
If you wish to sign up to a Taekwondo club in Swinton, you'll also have to register with the sport's official regulating body, namely British Taekwondo. You will be able to find plenty of information about safe practices, events, launching a new club, coaches and referees, clubs and members, equality and safeguarding, coaching courses, news, first aid, and more, by popping along to the official British Taekwondo website.
The Eight Basic Taekwondo Kicks
Taekwondo is famous for its vast array of kicking manoeuvres, more than any other martial art. The following are just a few: Back Kick (Dwo Chagi), Push Kick (Meereo Chagi), Whip or Hook Kick (Huryeo Chagi), Axe Kick (Naeryeo Chagi), Crescent Kick (Bandal Chagi), Front Kick (Ap Chagi), Side Kick (Yeop Chagi), Roundhouse Kick (Dollyo Chagi). Blocks: To stop and deflect an incoming attack, blocks (called Makgi) are employed. Held in particular positions, they use the hand and different areas of the arm. Each "block" can be coupled with a kick or punch to produce a counter-attack, and each is meant for a particular attack. The key "blocks" (makgi) include: Palm Block, Double Forearm Block, Knife Hand Block, Single Forearm Block, Double Knife Hand Block, Low Block, Rising Block, Nine Block and Upper Block.
Taekwondo Belts (Ranking)
In Tae kwon do there's really no form of standardization when it comes to belts and grades. It's all subject to what style you happen to be looking at, as there are so many different Taekwondo styles. However, they're typically divided into 2 groups "junior (colour) belts and "senior" (black) belts. The junior/colour ranks range from white to red, with anything from 8 to 12 ranks, while the black/senior belts usually have nine ranks.
