Irlam Taekwondo (M44): Learning a new skill is always rewarding and the martial arts are a popular choice these days. Taking up something like Taekwondo enables you to build your confidence, develop your body and mind, learn to defend yourself better and enhance your self-esteem. This more modern martial art has quickly grown in popularity since being developed in the 1940's in Korea.
Most people in Irlam would assume that the high kicking, fast punching movements demanded by Taekwondo are more suited to young kids. Whilst the physical demands of Taekwondo may make it more suitable for the younger generation, it can also be practiced by people of any age. It should however be said that if you are fairly fit you will definately get more enjoyment out of Taekwondo.
Based largely around kicking moves and manoeuvres like head kicks, spinning/jumping kicks and fast kicking strategies, Taekwondo was devised from the techniques of various martial arts, by a number of Seoul martial arts experts in new schools known as "Kwans" in the nineteen forties and fifties. These "Kwans" were given the names Mooduk Kwan, Chungdo Kwan, Jido Kwan, Songmu Kwan and Changmu Kwan.
With more than sixty million enthusiasts around the globe and a fair few in Irlam, Taekwondo has become extremely popular. This sport has even been included in the Olympic Games since 2000, and if you would like to get involved, heading along to your local Irlam Taekwondo club or class is an excellent place to start. There is no reason why you can't reach a high standard in this exciting sport, even if you don't have any desire to take part in the Olympics.
It seems that the most appealing aspect of Taekwondo is self-defence. You should not be surprised by this, when you take into account the high incidence of violence seen in today's town and city centres. The ability to defend yourself and at the same time exercising self-restraint and a respect for others is one of the key benefits of Taekwondo.
While it is nice to know that you can defend yourself any time you need to, it's hoped that you never need to test this outside of your local Taekwondo club environment.
Your First Irlam Taekwondo Class
If you have never tried Taekwondo previously, you could be somewhat apprehensive as to what can be expected on your first lesson. This will be different from club to club but will typically involve some or all of the following. A 15-20 minute warm up to increase heart rate and loosen muscles, a little technical training including learning some kicks, hand attacks, stances and blocks, learning some forms (or Poomse), an overview of sparring which will include attack timing, movement and timing, and finally a warm down to relax and stretch tired muscles.

Taekwondo Belts (Rank)
The ranking and belt system can get a bit bewildering in Taekwondo because there's no standardized system throughout the diverse Taekwondo disciplines. Similarities do exist though, and normally there are two distinct belt groups, signified as "juniors" (colours) and "seniors" (black dans). The number of grades in the junior section varies over the disciplines but is usually between eight and twelve belts, whilst the senior section commonly has 9 dans or belts.
In the UK there are a set of ranks in Taekwondo which are known as "Kup". The lowest is Tenth Kup and the highest is First Kup. As is the case with many of the martial arts, the Taekwondo belt order is indicated by a number of colours, so that the ranks are easily recognised. These colours are white, yellow, green, blue and red, with transitional belts with stripes in-between, namely - white with a yellow stripe, yellow with a green stripe, green with a blue stripe, blue with a red stripe and red with a black stripe. Beginners of Taekwondo in Irlam will commence with the Tenth Kup (White Belt), and progress through the various coloured belts until they accomplish the Red With Black Stripe Belt (First Kup)
When this training has been successfully completed, Irlam Taekwondo students are referred to as "black belt candidates", and they then need to progress through an additional 9 ranks if they're to become a Taekwondo "Black Belt", which is the consummate accolade. So, Junior Belts, Senior Belts and Black Belts are the 3 primary groups in the Taekwondo belt order in the UK. The Junior Taekwondo Belts comprise; White (10th), White With Yellow Stripe (9th), Yellow (8th), and Yellow With Green Stripe (7th). The Senior Taekwondo Belts are; Green (6th), Green With Blue Stripe (5th), Blue (4th), Blue With Red Stripe (3rd), Red (2nd) and Red With Black Stripe (1st). The Black Taekwondo Belts go from 1st to 9th Dan which can take many years to progress through.
