Taekwondo Jarrow
Jarrow Taekwondo (NE32): Originally established in Korea during the nineteen forties and fifties, Taekwondo is a fast combatative sport that's become exceedingly popular over the last thirty years or so. For individuals who would like to build your confidence, develop your body and mind, learn self-defence and enhance your self-respect, Taekwondo could be the ideal hobby or fitness activity.
As Taekwondo has quite high physical requirements, it is perhaps more suitable for the younger generation in Jarrow. That's not to say that the older generation cannot take part in this particular activity, but merely that there may be alternative martial arts which are more suited to the less nimble among us. Tai Chi would be a perfect example.
Taekwondo is a martial art that primarily consists of high-kicking moves and manoeuvres, in particular fast kicking methods, jumping/turning kicks and head kicks. It began in Seoul, in southern Korea during the 1940's, when a number of martial arts enthusiasts established schools called "kwans", which blended a variety of martial arts techniques.
Taekwondo has become really popular in Jarrow and all around the world, with over 60 million practitioners worldwide. Becoming a member of a local Jarrow Taekwondo club or class is an excellent way to get involved in this sporting activity which has even been included in the Olympic Games since the Sydney Games in 2000. While you might not aspire to Olympic competition, there's no reason why you should not become an expert at this exhilarating martial art and have a bit of fun in the process.
A key element of Taekwondo is self-defence, and doubtless this is one of the primary reasons that individuals in Jarrow join classes and take up the sport. There's been a troubling increase in violent conduct over the last few years and this is particularly common in town and city centres around Tyne and Wear and the country as a whole. The good thing about Taekwondo though, is that it also teaches self-discipline and a deep respect for others, not such familiar qualities in Jarrow nowadays.
There's a very good chance that your eagerly mastered Taekwondo skills will never have to be proven in the outside world, but it will certainly give you self-confidence knowing that they're there should you ever need them.
Your First Taekwondo Lesson
If you decide to register for Taekwondo training in Jarrow, the first thing you'll need to know is what will happen on the initial class and what precisely will the coach expect to see from you. Different Taekwondo masters in the Jarrow area will formulate differing routines for this initial lesson but you can expect to do a 15-20 minute warm-up to loosen your muscles and get the blood coursing, learn several forms (Poomse), cover some technical training (kicks, blocking techniques, stances and hand attacks), do some sparring, and last of all, warm-down.
The official body governing Taekwondo in the UK is British Taekwondo and anyone wishing to join a Taekwondo class in Jarrow must also become a member of British Taekwondo. By visiting British Taekwondo's website you can find facts about first aid, equality and safeguarding, coaches and competition referees, news, coaching courses, events, health and safety, establishing a new Taekwondo club, members and clubs, and a lot more Taekwondo related facts.
Tournaments and Competitions
There are a multitude of tournaments and competitions in Taekwondo associated with all the various styles. They mostly comprise sparring, breaking and patterns (forms) with little or no hard contact. ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) contests don't allow too much contact but sometimes allow hand attacks to be aimed at the head. WT (World Taekwondo) and Olympic contests only allow sparring. Multi-style contests are also held.
