Clayton-le-Moors Taekwondo (BB5): Originally created in Korea in the 1940's and 50's, Taekwondo is a fast paced combatative sport that has become exceedingly popular over the last thirty years or so. For those of you who would like to strengthen your body and mind, build your confidence, bolster your self-esteem and learn some self-defence moves, Taekwondo could be the ideal pastime or fitness activity.
Taekwondo is quite physically demanding, therefore it could be considered more appropriate for the younger rather than the older generation in Clayton-le-Moors. Its teachings of self-discipline and respect for others make it especially good for children. It could prove too taxing for some older adults, but should not be an issue for those who are already active and fit. People in Clayton-le-Moors who take up Taekwondo when they are young find it easy to continue when they become older. If you are less agile you could always try something a bit less demanding such as Tai Chi or Yoga.
Taekwondo is one of the more recently created of the martial arts, with its early beginnings in Korea, South-East Asia in 1945. A group of Korean martial artists in Seoul established some schools known as "kwans", merging various martial arts techniques. Taekwondo, which it eventually became known as, largely entails kicking manoeuvres, especially rapid kicking styles, head-height kicks and jumping/turning kicks.
Ever since the Sydney Olympic Games in the year 2000, Taekwondo has been a competitive Olympic sport. This has added to its popularity throughout the world with some 60 million people regularly participating in classes. And it's by enrolling in a Taekwondo class or club that you can begin your quest of learning this unique art.
For many people in Clayton-le-Moors, it is the self-defence aspect of Taekwondo that has the most appeal. This is not hard to believe when you take into account the high levels of violence experienced in town and city centres on a daily basis. It is a key factor of Taekwondo that you can become confident in your ability to defend yourself and at the same time learn to respect others and learn self-restraint.
With any luck, outside your local Taekwondo club environment, you won't ever need to try out your newly acquired techniques to defend yourself.

Taekwondo Belts
The ranking and belt system can get quite bewildering in Taekwondo as there isn't any recognised system across the various Taekwondo styles. Analogies can be found though, and usually there are two distinct belt groups, represented as "juniors" (colours) and "seniors" (black dans). The number of levels in the junior group varies over the styles but is typically somewhere between eight and twelve belts, while the senior groupings commonly has nine belts or dans.
In the UK Taekwondo has a set of ranks (belts) that are known as "Kup", these ranks range from 10th (lowest) to 1st (highest). As is the case with many of the martial arts, the Taekwondo belt order is portrayed by a range of different colours, so that the ranks are easily identified. These colours are white, yellow, green, blue and red, with transitional belts with stripes in-between, namely - white with a yellow stripe, yellow with a green stripe, green with a blue stripe, blue with a red stripe and red with a black stripe. Beginners of Taekwondo in Clayton-le-Moors will begin with the 10th Kup (White Belt), and advance through the different coloured belts until they achieve the Red Belt With a Black Stripe (1st Kup).
After this training has been accomplished, Clayton-le-Moors Taekwondo students become "black belt candidates", and they then have to earn an additional nine ranks or Dans if they are to become a Taekwondo "Black Belt", which is the ultimate distinction. So, Junior, Senior and Black Belts are the three primary divisions in the Taekwondo belt order in the UK. The Taekwondo Belts in the Junior group are; 10th (White), 9th (White With Yellow Stripe), 8th (Yellow), and 7th (Yellow With Green Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Senior group are; 6th (Green), 5th (Green With Blue Stripe), 4th (Blue), 3rd ( Blue With Red Stripe), 2nd (Red), and 1st (Red With Black Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Black group go from 1st to 9th Dan, a qualification process which will take many years.
