Taekwondo Belts
In Tae kwon do there's not really any standardisation when it comes to belts and grades. It's all determined by which style you're reviewing, as there are so many different Taekwondo styles and rules. They are however, usually divided into 2 groups "junior (colour) belts and "senior" (black) belts. The colour/junior ranks range from white to red, with from eight to twelve rankings, while the black/senior belts normally have 9 rankings.
In the UK there are a set of ranks (belts) in Taekwondo that are known as "Kup". The lowest (beginners) rank is 10th Kup and the highest is 1st Kup. As is the case with most of the martial arts, the Taekwondo belt order is indicated by a number of colours, so that the ranks can be easily recognised. These colours are white, yellow, green, blue and red, with transitional belts with stripes in-between, namely - white with a yellow stripe, yellow with a green stripe, green with a blue stripe, blue with a red stripe and red with a black stripe. Beginners of Taekwondo in Teignmouth will start out with the White Belt (Tenth Kup), and proceed through the different coloured belts until they achieve the Red With Black Stripe Belt (First Kup)
After this has been completed, Taekwondo students in Teignmouth are considered to be "black belt candidates" which requires them to proceed through a further 9 ranks (Dans) up until they eventually achieve the accolade of "Black Belt". So, Junior Belt, Senior Belt and Black Belt are the 3 main divisions in the Taekwondo belt order. The Taekwondo Belts in the Junior group comprise; 10th (White), 9th (White With Yellow Stripe), 8th (Yellow), and 7th (Yellow With Green Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Senior group comprise; 6th (Green), 5th (Green With Blue Stripe), 4th (Blue), 3rd ( Blue With Red Stripe), 2nd (Red), and 1st (Red With Black Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Black group range from 1st to 9th Dan, a qualification process which takes many years.
